A Guatemalan court has convicted former dictator Efrain Rios Montt on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, sentencing him to 80 years in prison.
The 86-year-old former general is the first former Latin American leader ever found guilty of such a charge.
A three-judge tribunal issued the verdict after the nearly two-month trial in which dozens of victims testified about horrific atrocities.
Rios Montt denies having knowledge of the massacres that happened involving indigenous people while he was in power.

It seems that when you scream at your kids and call them “garbage” and “fatty” on a regular basis, you often end up with depressed kids. That’s not an enormous surprise. What is surprising, however, that Amy Chua’s technique—which advises explosive anger and name-calling when a child falls short of expectations, amongst other things—doesn’t even get results. “[T]iger moms produced kids who felt more alienated from their parents and experienced higher instances of depressive symptoms. They also had lower GPAs, despite feeling more academic pressure.” Chua, who originally wrote that “the solution to substandard performance is always to excoriate, punish and shame the child,” has back-peddled slightly since her book was published in 2011.
